Six boats that frame the Nord Star 36+ decision
Axopar 38, Targa 37, Saxdor 340 GTWA, Pursuit OS325, Regulator 35 and Back Cove 372. Together they show the biggest tradeoffs in the premium 35–42-foot market: enclosure, deck access, propulsion, family cruising, fishing utility and brand exclusivity.
1. Targa 37 — the closest philosophical benchmark
Both are Finnish all-weather walkaround concepts. The Targa is a useful benchmark for robust traditional pilothouse execution; Nord Star emphasizes a more premium family-cruising atmosphere while retaining serious weather protection.
2. Axopar 38 — the modern outboard alternative
Axopar answers the same adventure-boating problem with modularity, outboards and a lighter performance-forward feel. It is the right boat to board if you are deciding between modern crossover speed and a more substantial traditional all-weather cruiser.
3. Saxdor 340 GTWA — enclosed performance and social space
This is a strong test of whether you value terrace-style social space and outboard performance more than Nord Star's traditional walkaround/protected-cruiser approach.
4. Pursuit OS325 — the U.S. offshore express reference
Pursuit is useful for understanding the American premium offshore formula: fishing capability, outboard service familiarity and real cabin utility.
5. Regulator 35 — ride and offshore bias
Regulator helps isolate what you give up and gain when moving from an open offshore platform to a true enclosed wheelhouse boat.
6. Back Cove 372 — the Downeast alternative
Back Cove is the higher-end U.S. enclosed-cruising reference: refined interior, protected helm and strong regional familiarity, but a different deck and mission philosophy.
