The official Category B parameters
Under the EU Recreational Craft Directive, Category B craft are designed for wind force up to and including Beaufort 8 and significant wave heights up to and including 4 meters. The standard concerns design and construction for those parameters.
The official Category C parameters
Category C craft are designed for wind force up to and including Beaufort 6 and significant wave heights up to and including 2 meters. Many recreational boats are Category C, while numerous Nordic pilothouse models in this site’s competitive set carry Category B ratings.
What the rating does not mean
It is not a recommendation to intentionally operate in the maximum listed conditions. Seamanship, loading, breaking waves, current, visibility, temperature, equipment and crew capability all matter. Significant wave height is also a statistical measure, so individual waves can be larger.
Why buyers still care
The category is useful as one objective data point when comparing European-built boats. If two models have different design categories, ask the builders why. Construction details, stability, drainage, openings and intended passenger loads can all be part of the answer.
Examples in the adventure-boat category
Current manufacturer specifications list Category B capability on models including Nord Star’s larger all-weather cruisers, Axopar 29/37/38 XC, Sargo 31/33/36, Quarken 35 Cabin, Saxdor 320 GTC/400 GTC and XO EXPLR 44, although some boats carry dual B/C passenger ratings or market-specific configurations.
Always verify the plate and documentation for the specific boat you are buying.
Passenger ratings can change by category
Some boats list one passenger capacity when operated under Category B and a higher capacity under Category C. Axopar, for example, publishes different B and C passenger numbers on several models. That is a useful reminder that “maximum passengers” is not always a single universal number.
For a U.S. buyer, the practical lesson is to read the builder’s plate and documentation for the exact boat. Do not copy a capacity number from a marketplace listing or a different market version.
Use design category as one layer of due diligence
A Category B rating can be meaningful when comparing boats intended for exposed-water use, but it should sit alongside hull design, drainage, openings, redundancy, visibility, fuel range and crew competence. A certificate cannot make an overloaded or poorly operated boat safe.
Likewise, a Category C boat can be an excellent choice for protected coastal use. Buying a higher category than the mission requires can add cost and weight without improving the way you actually boat.
Do not compare CE category with U.S. offshore labels casually
U.S. marketing language such as “offshore,” “bluewater” or “coastal” is not necessarily equivalent to the EU design-category framework. CE Category B and C have defined design parameters under European law; an American brochure adjective may simply describe intended use.
That distinction is why the underlying documentation matters. If a seller says a European boat is “Category B,” ask to see the builder’s plate and declaration information. If a U.S.-built competitor is described as offshore-capable, evaluate its applicable standards and manufacturer documentation on their own terms rather than trying to force a direct label conversion.
The rating is most useful when comparing models built under the same framework. It can help explain why passenger capacities, openings, drainage or structural choices differ between boats that look similar at a boat show.
