Why outboards have taken over so much of the category
Modern high-horsepower outboards offer excellent power-to-weight ratios, joystick options, easy repowering and straightforward access for service. They also allow builders to move machinery outside the hull and reclaim interior storage.

Why diesel/inboard still matters
Diesel inboards remain attractive for owners who value long-range cruise characteristics, a clear swim platform and the feel of a heavier cruising boat. Nord Star, Targa and Sargo have strong roots in inboard diesel configurations, although exact offerings vary by model and market.
Maintenance and service
The “easier” system is often the one your local yard knows best. Outboards are mechanically accessible and widely supported in the U.S., but multiple large engines can make annual service expensive. Diesel systems bring their own maintenance schedule and drive-system complexity.
Ask for a five-year service estimate on the actual engine package rather than relying on generic assumptions.
Range and efficiency
Do not compare gallons per hour at different speeds. Compare fuel per nautical mile at realistic cruise. Hull weight, deadrise, load and trim can outweigh the theoretical advantage of one fuel type. Manufacturer cruise data is a useful starting point, but your sea trial should validate the operating point you expect to use.

“Outboard versus diesel” is not a winner-take-all question. It is a mission and service-network question.
Noise and vibration deserve a real test
Do not assume one propulsion type is always quieter. Modern outboards can be impressively refined at cruise, while diesel installations vary enormously depending on engine-room insulation, mounts, exhaust and drive system. Test sound from the helm and the aft-most passenger seat at the speed you expect to use most often.
Also test at idle. Families spend significant time maneuvering, waiting for bridges, trolling or moving through no-wake zones. A propulsion package that is pleasant at 30 knots but intrusive at 6 knots can still affect the ownership experience.
Repower versus rebuild economics
Outboards offer a clear lifecycle advantage when the time comes to repower: the engines are external and replacement is a familiar dealer operation. Inboard repower can be more involved, but well-maintained diesels can also deliver long service lives. The relevant question is not theoretical engine longevity; it is what the complete boat will be worth and how you plan to own it.
If you expect to sell in five years, local buyer familiarity may matter more than 20-year engine life. If you plan to keep the boat for decades, access, corrosion control and long-term parts availability deserve more weight.
Fuel type is also an infrastructure decision
Think about where you actually fuel. Gasoline is widely available at U.S. recreational marinas, while diesel may be easier at larger commercial or cruising facilities in some regions. If the boat will be trailered or fueled from land stations, the equation changes again.
For long trips, calculate range using the tank’s usable capacity and a reserve rather than the absolute published number. Compare fuel burn at your desired cruise, not the manufacturer’s most efficient speed if you know you will run faster. A 10% change in speed can create a meaningful range difference on some hulls.
Also consider storage and safety practices for any auxiliary fuel systems such as diesel heaters. The propulsion decision can interact with cabin heating, generator choice and overall fuel-management complexity in ways that are easy to overlook during initial shopping.
