What to inspect on a Pacific Northwest cruiser
Visibility and weather management: sit at the helm with everyone in their normal seats. Look at the wiper coverage, defrost provision and sight lines through pillars and doors. Ask how heating, ventilation and demisting are equipped on the displayed boat, not simply what can be ordered.
Movement aboard: examine handholds, boarding height, side-deck transitions and where wet clothing would go. Check how easily a single crewmember can move between the helm and a docking point while remaining within the layout’s intended operating arrangements.
Time away: assess usable berths, head access, food storage and electrical demand for your actual trip length. An attractive cabin on a quiet show day can feel different once bags, bedding and the full crew are aboard.
A practical indoor / in-water plan
Use your first marina appointment to test the spatial questions that are hard to answer from drawings. Then use the indoor visit for equipment and service conversations generated by that walkthrough. Leave room to return with a focused question rather than trying to finalize an entire build on the first pass.
Bring the same list to each dealer: service coverage near your home port, commissioning, training, transport and the availability of a representative sea trial. These are ownership questions rather than claims that one brand is inherently safer in all conditions.
